Susan Leeson
I am the resident printmaker at Eastgate Studio in Beverley, working across linocut, collagraph, lithography and screenprint. My practice is process-led: although I begin with a broad idea, the work evolves through the physical act of making. The plate, the ink and the press all shape the final image, and I embrace the unexpected shifts that happen in the studio.
I am drawn to the tactile qualities of printmaking, carving, layering, inking, wiping, overprinting. My coastal works use a limited palette of greys, blues and greens, simplifying landscape into abstracted shapes through one and two-plate linocuts. Collagraph allows me to build textured plates that capture the tonal shifts of shoreline and tide, each print emerging as a unique response to surface and pressure.
Recent projects have expanded into chine-collé, overprinting and fabric, where experimentation becomes central. One piece often leads directly to the next. I enjoy the balance between structure and spontaneity: while prints are editioned, subtle variations in ink, pressure and handling mean that every impression retains its own character.
