My art explores natural forms and textures, using watery and mixed media. I’m an artist, marine biologist and palaeontologist who is fascinated by the complexity of the natural world, its processes and interconnections. I find subtle beauty in everyday natural subjects, I want to share this perspective, inspire curiosity and passion for nature.

My process is a journey of discovery, as I observe and explore new ways of seeing, creating and how we connect with our environment, inspires us and how it shapes our culture. Using an enhanced nature-inspired colour palette, I experiment with different methods to create surface texture, iridescent and reflective effects to highlight the unique qualities of aquatic species. I use different approaches to facilitate or impede flow and mixing, creating watery effects. The wet surface has a life of its own and directs the background/context. I contrast an immersive view of the subject, with the fluidity of the natural environment. This reflects my own feelings – we can study a species in isolation – but once outside in ‘the wild’ there are many unknowns. I create works that I hope will encourage the viewer to observe closely, ask questions and explore different ways of seeing and understanding.
